House chaplain forced out by Ryan

House Chaplain Patrick Conroy’s sudden resignation has sparked a furor on Capitol Hill, with sources in both parties saying he was pushed out by Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.).

Conroy’s own resignation announcement stated that it was done at Ryan’s request.

“As you have requested, I hereby offer my resignation as the 60th Chaplain of the United States House of Representatives,” the April 15 letter to Ryan, obtained by The Hill, states.
Through his office, Conroy, who has served as chaplain since 2011, declined to comment on Thursday. His resignation is effective May 24.

Four different sources — two from each party — say Conroy was told that he must retire or that he would be dismissed.

The message from Ryan was delivered by his chief of staff, Jonathan Burks.

As U.S., North Korea plan to meet, Iran warns against Trump deals

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A U.S. push to change the Iran nuclear deal was sending a “very dangerous message” that countries should never negotiate with Washington, Iran’s foreign minister warned as U.S. and North Korean leaders prepare to meet for denuclearisation talks.

Speaking to reporters in New York on Saturday, Mohammad Javad Zarif also said that for French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Angela Merkel “to try to appease the president (Donald Trump) would be an exercise in futility.”

Trump will decide by May 12 whether to restore U.S. economic sanctions on Tehran, which would be a severe blow to the 2015 pact between Iran and six major powers. He has pressured European allies to work with Washington to fix the deal.

Macron and Merkel are both due to meet with Trump in Washington this week.

Colin Kaepernick honored with Amnesty International award

Amnesty International has awarded civil rights activist and former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick with its top award.

Kaepernick was presented Amnesty International’s Ambassador of Conscience Award for 2018 in the Netherlands on Saturday.

“The Ambassador of Conscience award celebrates the spirit of activism and exceptional courage, as embodied by Colin Kaepernick. He is an athlete who is now widely recognized for his activism because of his refusal to ignore or accept racial discrimination,” said Salil Shetty, Secretary General of Amnesty International.

Words You've Looked Up but STILL Don't "Get"

Not talking about failure to retain the definition. For me, "eschatology" and "epistemology" are in that category: I know what they mean, but I have to refresh my understanding from time to time.

No, what I'm talking about here is a word like trope. I've looked it up, and here's the definition from Dictionary.com: "any literary or rhetorical device, as metaphor, metonymy, synecdoche, and irony, that consists in the use of words in other than their literal sense."

What the HELL does THAT mean??? And yes, I know and understand the definitions of metaphor, metonymy, synecdoche, and irony, but I STILL don't know what a trope is!

Do you have examples of a word (or words) that, despite your most studious efforts, leave you frustrated to this very day?

Pompeo lacks votes for positive vote on panel

CIA Director Mike Pompeo is officially short of the votes needed to clear the Senate Foreign Relations Committee next week.

Sen. Chris Coons (D-Del.) said Friday that “after carful consideration” he will oppose Pompeo’s nomination to lead the State Department.

“I remain concerned that Director Pompeo will not challenge the President in critical moments,” he said in a statement.

“On vital decisions facing our country, Director Pompeo seems less concerned with rule of law and partnership with our allies and more inclined to emphasize unilateral action and the use of force,” he added.
